The most important instrument you will work with as a counsellor is yourself. The desire to help others is important in our profession, but in itself, is not enough. Effective counselling training has to incorporate four components:    1. Deep personal awareness    2. Thorough knowledge of theory and techniques    3. Skills training    4. Supervised clinical practice Our two year course meets the criteria set down by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). The course is organised on a part-time basis over the two years in an ongoing training group. There is also a requirement to complete 100 practice hours (see below). Your group will meet on a weekly basis on Wednesdays in order to cover the core modules of the course. There are 7 modules in year 1 and 8 in year 2. The modules will include the following topics: (Please note tutors and timetables are subject to change.)     * Personal Development     * Lifespan Development     * Group Process     * Theories of Counselling, including;           o Person Centred Approach           o Psychodynamic Perspectives           o Cognitive Behavioural Therapy           o Abnormal Psychology           o Family &: Systemic Approaches     * Universal Issues In Counselling - Loss, Bereavement & Sexuality     * Skills & Strategies of Counselling There is a requirement for all students to have completed a minimum of 100 hours practical client work over the course of the programme. Students will be assessed by their trainers and a decision will be made about their competence to work with clients. Once the student is competent to see clients, Churchtown Counselling & Psychotherapy Clinic will arrange access to suitable clients.
